One young man's testimony on side effects of Quinolones

From a November, 2000 newsgroup posting

For almost a year now I have suffered a great deal. Mainly genital, but some very scary neurological symptoms as well. I have been to a dozen different doctors and I have been told that I have had everything from "its all in your head" to Reiter's Syndrome and Behcet's Syndrome. Well, it has taken me a long time to figure this out but I finally think that I know what is really wrong.
Most, and I am not saying all, urologists prescribe unwarranted antibiotics even if no infectious agent is found. Yes, I know there are several different theories on the empirical use of these meds and that some people actually get results from this type of treatment. In my case I believe that the quinlones, most often prescribed by urologists, actually did more harm to me than they did good.
A year ago I was a healthy 31 year old male with only an ache here or there, probably just like everyone else. Today I am a 32 year old male with a burning penis, terrible back and sciatica pain, oral problems, joint, tendon, and occasional tingling on the left side of my face and in my legs.. Is it possible that all of these things were caused by prostatitis? I don't think so. I have been tested almost monthly for any type of STD, including herpes, and have been with the same women since my symptoms began.
Just my opinion but I would never take another quinlone unless I was on my death bed, and believe me for the past year I have often thought I was! Take a little time to check out this site on quinlones. Maybe before the next time you hand them out like candy, you will have a second thought about how you could be destroying someones life.
For those of you that are taking them, good luck to you and make sure you are informed about the possible side effects of your medications. None of my doctors recognized any of my symptoms as side effects and I think that is why I am in such bad shape now.
Good luck to you all.
